“Wet” felt

“Wet” felt is a fibrous material permeated with binding agents and normally delivered in the form of rolls. It is made from mullite-siliceous fibers and inorganic binders.
Depending on the amount and concentration of the binders used, in line with the degree of compression applied when felt – still in wet condition- is being installed, it fits in with about any surface once dried up, demonstrating  required density and endurance .
“Wet” felt characteristics:

  • Products in the form of “wet” felt are efficacious and convenient when used for high-temperature insulation of machines of complicated shape and configuration, curvelinear  surfaces as well as the sealing of seams.
  • Once installed, this product will not emit any harmful fumes or substances during the process of drying, either in normal conditions or when a drying process is used.
  • “wet” felt is easy to lay out
  • It can easily be transported at any time of the year

Not wettable by aluminium melts, “wet” felt has earned a good reputation in non-ferrous metallurgy.  Trays and spouts made of wet felt are easy to install and use in pouring aluminium.

Industrial use of wet felt

  • thermal insulation of the outer surface of glass furnaces` arches
  • lining of shaft furnaces` lids.
  • lining of ladle-heating stands` lids.
  • lining of steel ladles` covers.
  • thermal insulation of heating furnaces` skid pipes of rolling mills.
  • Inner-surface lining of industrial furnaces` gas ducts.
  • lining for spouts used for pouring liquid aluminium.
  • thermal insulation of high-frequency current machines` inductors surfaces.
  • thermal insulation of the walls of industrial furnaces, boilers, foundry ladles.
  • heat-reflection lining of inner surfaces of gas industrial furnaces` walls and arches
  • Fire-prevention and protection of electric cables against the impact caused by an outer source of fire or self-combustion
  • sealing of seams and crevices in the fireproof walls and arches of industrial furnaces.
  • emergency repair of the patches of industrial furnaces` roofs with loose or destroyed bricks.

The use of wet felt as PN-34 cover` lining resulted in: (JSC «Kirov-Energomash Plant», St. Petersburg)

  • 7 times` reduction in the weight of the cover
  • the temperature of the outer surface of the cover being reduced to 500 degrees Celcius
  • higher speed at which melting charge was heated -1200° C p/h
  • shorter time span needed for the furnace to reach a working temperature (2-hour reduction)
  • increased productivity of the furnace
